The Nineteen Enochian Calls, The Keys from Dr John Dee's Manuscripts
The Nineteen Enochian Calls
The Keys from Dr John Dee's manuscripts, in full
The nineteen Calls, or Keys, are the best known texts in Enochian magick: nineteen short invocations in the Angelical language. The first eighteen work through the angels of the system, and the nineteenth, the longest of them, is the Call of the Thirty Aethyrs. Together they are the working core of a larger set, the 48 Claves Angelicae, the Forty-Eight Angelical Keys.
They were received in 1584, in Cracow, in the workings of Dr John Dee, scholar, astrologer and adviser to Queen Elizabeth, with Edward Kelley, who scryed in the stone while Dee questioned and wrote everything down. The Calls came through between April and July of that year, word by word, and Dee afterwards wrote them out fair in his own hand, with his own English written above the Angelical words as he went.
Dee's fair copy survives in the British Library as Sloane MS 3191. The diaries behind it reached print in 1659, when Meric Casaubon published them in A True & Faithful Relation, that printing gives the first words of every Call, and the Nineteenth Call in full. One quirk of the old print is worth knowing before it confuses anyone counting along: in the diary the numbering of the early Calls was disputed at the time ("behold, is the fourth, but with you the third"), and Casaubon's list, counting the disputed item, runs one number ahead of Dee's manuscript leaves from that point on. The numbering used here follows the manuscript, and is the numbering in common use: Calls 1 to 18, then the Call of the Thirty Aethyrs as the Nineteenth.
The texts themselves are public domain, and they are given here as they stand: Calls 1–18 transcribed from Dee's manuscript, the Nineteenth from Casaubon's printing. The transcription is as-written and has not yet been proofread, Dee's spelling and capitalisation are his own, and any reading that is doubtful is marked [?]. These are not modern translations. Beneath each Call runs Dee's own English, the word-by-word rendering he wrote above the Angelical in the manuscript itself.

Dee's English: O you heavens which dwell in the first air, are mighty in the parts of the earth, and execute the judgement of the highest to you. It is said: Behold the face of your God, the beginning of comfort, whose eyes are the brightness of the heavens, which provided you for the government of the earth, and her unspeakable variety, furnishing you with a power, understanding to dispose all things according [?]. And rose up in the beginning saying, The earth, let her be governed by her parts, and let there be division in her, that the glory of her may be always drunken and vexed in itself. Her course, let it run with the Heavens, and as an handmaid let her serve them one season: let it confound another, and let there be no creature upon, or within her the same. All her members let them differ in their qualities, and let there be no one creature equal with another. The reasonable creatures of the earth, or man, let them vex and weed out one another. And the dwelling places, let them forget their names, the work of man and his pomp: let them be defaced, his buildings, let them become caves for the beasts of the field. Confound her understanding with darkness, for why? It repenteth me I made man. One while let her be known, and another while a stranger, because she is the bed of an harlot, and the dwelling place of him that is fallen. O you heavens, arise! The lower heavens underneath you, let them serve you; govern those that govern, cast down such as fall, bring forth with those that increase, and destroy the rotten. No place, let it remain in one number. Adde and diminish until the stars be numbered; arise, move and appear before the Covenant of his mouth, which he hath sworn unto us in his justice. Open the mysteries of your creation, and make us partakers of undefiled knowledge.
